http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2007/12/29/emery_overslept/To me this reeks like the debacle with Kevin Weekes a while ago when he missed practice because of an apparent break in at his house or something retarded like that. To me it seems as though his one good season has gone to his head, not to mention the one good playoffs and the subsequent big ticket contract. I just think he needs a reality check and realize he's not king shit. Not to mention the "hissy fit" he threw at practice because of apparent lack of ice time. Just my two cents

It's true. I am not racist, but it seems to me that black people cannot control their rage more often. Take a look at the NBA. Again, I am not racist.

The definition Of racism is what you are actually describing, so in essense, in saying that your aren't a racist actually makes you look more like one. Definition of Racism. : "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement" (*IE: the Belief that skin color has something to do with the a person's ability to control their emotions) Black people can control their rage just the same as white, asian, hispanic, first nations people can. Some INDIVIDUALS are different. And sometimes people make dumb-shit moves. No matter what color they are. Perhaps Weekes and Emery possess some similarities in their ability to handle frustration, however I don't think that has anything to do with their similar skin colour. Perhaps it's time that the Mods do their jobs and close this thread.

A few things to point out here.....
1. The NBA was forced to institute a dress code because of the "gansta style" that many of these "grown men" who make millions of dollars choose to sport. And unfortunately that "style" is the same as the one that is worn by many gangs. It looks sloppy and unprofessional, and it's about making a statement. But why do these African-American men feel the need to make this statement?
2. Why are the majority of gangs in the cities generally made up by "minorities"? Latinos/Hispanics, Asians, AfroCanadian/Americans.....but so few caucasian's. What is the reason for this?
3. Why is it that so often, when a player (that falls into a minority group) is asked to conform to a set standard that everyone else (his peers and colleagues) seems to hold to he will cry racism. Though maybe not in this particular case, but it is at the point where "the organization" or "institution" is hesitant to enforce a ruling for fear of being tarred with a racist brush.
4. Everyone is racist. Any time you generalize or make a blanket statement about a group of people, you are being racist. So that tells me that all racism is not wrong.....merely the predjudiced kind.
So when someone thinks that these "Fity-Cent" types are a lazy, criminals, or just bad people in general.....they are stereotyping no? Yes, but not by race as people assume, but by the genre of lifestyle that they do not condone. It is not the fault of the individual that the so many of these "minorities" which they stereotype choose to live the lifestyle that they do.
In Emery's case.....he's often struck me as a guy with a chip on his shoulder. The hat on all cock-eyed, the short fuse on ice.....it's what he has chosen. And that's how he will be perceived.
This thread need not be locked up.....but perhaps moved to the OF.

A little nose candy or lack thereof can make for a pretty temperamental net minder

What is the reason for this? The relative lack of poverty in long-established caucasian communities. The racial makeup of gang membership tracks quite well with the relative portion of each racial group living below the poverty line. This is also supported by the makeup of gangs throughout US history, as before the current era there were many urban gangs made up of (then) poor Italians and Irish. Heck, as recently as 40 years ago Boston was being rocked by street wars between rival "Irish" gangs.

However, why do multi-millionaire athletes feel the need to proliferate "the life and style" as a fashion statement?

This thread need not be locked up.....but perhaps moved to the OF. 2)Because Whites are and have for centuries been the dominant ethnicity in the first world, and the other ethnic groups have yet to recovouver from the oppression white society has imposed upon them. an entire culture and lifestyle emerged from the poverty and slums the white society for so long forced those of other ethnicity into. 3) because it's convenient, just like it's convenient for some white people to claim that racism is not at the root of some of the decisions made. 4)i know a great many people who don't make blanket statements about others based on skin colour or ethnicitiy. i skipped one, not because i don't have an answer but because the answer would require far to much of an explanation on how opression shaped that entire culture and how intertwined basketball is with that culture and why, and i just can not be assed to do it.

That also explains why you have white guys doing the adminstration in NBA. Any black coaches in the NHL for example? Sure we can all say that the African Americans have great athleticism. However we might assume that they lack other elements as well.?

Jesus fucking christ. This is not the can of worms I wanted opened up. My topic merely states or leads to the conclusion that Emery is displaying similar behaviour to that of Kevin Weekes when he was a Vancouver Canuck. It was a comparison of two professional atheletes who apparently have similar behavioural issues.
Your perception that this was meant to spark controversey because there also happen to be similar characteristics with both individuals is something I would expect from Americans, but not you... to whom I have given the benefit of the doubt and assumed you to be intelligent, informed and sensible Canadians. But also shame to those of you who bought into the trap brought forth by HG.
All I can do is shake my head, it's a wonder why this board appears to be on a downward spiral with regard to content and good conversation. When a legitimate hockey issue is brought forth for discussion, and the discussion fires off on such a wild tangent so as to do a complete 180 degree turn and create controversy which ultimately implicates the poster because of mob mentality, it really is quite pathetic.
Hmm, now I must admit this response looks horribly defensive. Truth be told this is a sensitive topic for me, I don't condone or tolerate racism at all, so it bugs me when the issue is dragged through the mud when is no need for it. Way to go Hockey God

I won't even get into a back and forth with you about ignorance, and start trading insults. However, my statement about the "dress code" and what all was born out my mind wandering back to when I followed the NBA and played basketball alot myself. When Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley, to name a few, were at the height of their stardom and on the highlight reel every night. I don't recall ever seeing any of them showing up to a game or doing an interview in the style of dress that is now worn by the likes of Iverson, Anthony, and Lebron James, again to name a few. And I would think it is fairly safe to say that the former group was much closer to the oppression and poverty that was "forced" on afro-americans by their "white masters". It's this massive backlash, and backwards step. We see now, 3 generations removed from the segregation and racism, the "minority" group crying out about how they are discriminated against. Yet their examples of racism and bigotry are 30+ years old. Next thing you know they'll be bitching about how "white franchise owner's" in the NBA and NFL are racist because they sign more blacks than whites, and that isn't right because it pigeonholes them for their "physical prowess" and leads to an athletic stereotype. Whether or not you want to admit it, their are certain traits that are more prevalent in various ethnic groups. It's not racism to see that, generally speaking, blacks are better athletes and seemingly possessing of a higher degree of fast-twitch muscle fibres. But they don't generally seem to dominate strongman competitions or excel at winter sports (regardless of where they live). Is it racist when you point out the obvious that all Arabs are terrorists at heart? I don't think so.....that was a joke btw. Asian's seem to be in their element working with numbers and the technical aspect of things. They show a penchant for a disciplined lifestyle. However they don't possess some of the physical prowess of blacks. Much of this is cultural, I grant you. It depends on where they grew up and what they were exposed to as developing children and adolescents. But those are just a few examples. QUOTE(Canucks Fan) The definition Of racism is what you are actually describing, so in essense, in saying that your aren't a racist actually makes you look more like one. Definition of Racism. : "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement" (*IE: the Belief that skin color has something to do with the a person's ability to control their emotions) My comment about everyone being racist was in response to your definition of racism. If you want to adhere to facts and scientific observation done through cultural studies, then everyone is racist. I suppose it's racist of medical scientists and doctors to perscribe a different medication to african men than their caucasian counterparts? Is it still racist when the medication is one that is more effective in black men due to a difference in the chemical make-up of our bodies and a genetic disposition to certain conditions? Yeah, probably should give the black guy the same medication and treat him equally.....no sense actually helping him out and caring that there is a better way for him. Just an example. So am I racist? Hell yes. However I don't base a discriminating point of view on the color of their skin, but rather on the lifestyle choice they make. I think "ganstas" are a blight on our society, however I think the same thing about "trailer trash whites" that sit on wellfare.
