Elite defender, Norris winner, Stanley Cup champion, Olympic Gold medal winner, World Cup winner etc. while represented by one of the most credible and influential GM's in the league.
vs.
Elite third liner in his prime, fourth line thug for the majority of his career and represented by... Garth Snow.
An impossible position for Colin et al to be in. Pronger is an old-time hockey player who plays the game on the edge with huge success - he's a winner, he's a difference maker and he sells the game. Simon otoh, gets no respect because, well, he ain't got game. Factor in the General Managers speaking on behalf of their players and their's really no argument.
My opinion, Pronger got a fair suspension. I may disagree with the length of some of his previous punishments, but this one is bang on. As for Simon, he got burned. Take away the slash to the head and the most he'd get for the Rutuu stomp is likely 10-12.
Props to Simon for speaking out though.
Consider this if you will: Say Pronger does a two-step on someone not named Rutuu, Kesler or Avery, rather, a superstar ala Sydney, Iginla or Parise - considering the victim's place in the league and where his GM sits amongst the powers-that-be, would that alter Campbell's (et al) final decision?
