QUOTE(Dom @ Oct 13 2005, 07:14 PM)
Is that a racial slur?

I've got to catch up on my racism...

Oh come on Dom!

You can't see how "monkey" could be taken as a racist comment??

I guess if Avery had called him "Aunt Jamima", no offense shoulda been taken either eh?

rolleyes.gif

I think you know damn well it was a racist comment. I think you're just trying to downplay the incident in a show of solidarity....

So I guess if you were a coloured person, you wouldn't understand or take offense if someone called you, say, "Antique Farm Equipment"?

mad.gif

What about: Spear-Chucker, Melon-eater, Shoe-shiner, Jungle-bunny, Donkey-gums.....

Wouldn't bother you in the least eh?

mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

Who do you think you're fooling Dom......

if Avery is human (shouldn't someone named Avery be a bird -chicken posibly) then being a monkey could only be a compliment.

What does Coon (or possibly Koon I’m not sure how it’s spelt) mean?

While I’m at it, how come Iginla is only sorta black and Carter is so black you can’t see his nose black yet all white guys look white.

Except for albino guys!

Can black guys be albino?

That was Howard Cosell.

No, it was Jimmy (the Greek) Snyder. He never was in broadcasting another day.

He lives in the good ol' U S of A, they don't allow such things anymore.

Seriously, what difference does it make if he called him nigger or monkey?

Like "oh no, don't call me NIGGER you cock-smoking motherfucker!"

Yeah, I can see it now: Referees giving 5 minute majors (game misconducts, suspension for multiple offences?) for name calling.

Give me fucking break. Shut the fuck up, nigger.

Coon is another slur for black people. It probably refers to the Portuguese word for slave pens or barracks, "baracoons". It could also have meaning as a shortening of "raccoon", as raccoons have a tendency to steal. Possibly from Dr. Carleton Coon, who, in the mid-1960's, theorized that blacks were less evolved than whites.

Well, I think racial slurs are generally considered to be a different kettle of fish than your garden-variety insults, just because of all the past hatred associated with them. People just tend to be way more sensitive about it.

What would be really interesting is if there were any openly gay players in the league - terms like faggot and homo get tossed around all the time on the ice without anyone reporting them, but if some of the players were gay then that would probably get clamped down on pretty quick as well.

I don't buy it. Okay, we've established that I certainly don't look at the world the same way most others do, so I'll take your word for it that there are varying degrees of hatred.

Well yes, there have been no openly gay NHL players, but that doesn't mean there never has been one.

And I find it quite interesting that you didn't equate the word "cocksucker" as a gay epithet. To me it means almost the identical of "faggot" & "homo".

Something you're not telling us, Korny? blink.gif laugh.gif

Depends how many white guys were in the wood pile.

Yes there are "black" albinos. Maybe you'll see one while in Jamaica. Hell. pick a a Yellowman disc.

Jimmy the Greek may have said something similar, but the infamous "little monkey" comment was Howard Cosell.

"In 1988, on Martin Luther King's birthday, sports commentator Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder said (on national television) that Black people were better at sports because of slave plantation breeding techniques. "During the slave period, the slave owner would breed his Black with his big woman so that he would have a big black-kid that's were it all started." Another sports announcer Billy Packer referred to Pro-basketball player Allan Iverson as a "tough monkey." Another announcer, Howard Cosell referred to Alvin Garrett, a pro football player with the Washington Redskins as "little monkey" during a Monday Night Football game. The comments made by Cosell and Packer did not go without any punitive consequences." cool.gif

Look here if you need to brush up on your racial slurs. I mean you should never be at a loss when you need a good racial slur. cool.gif
