Everett, WA- July 12, 2006 Former Everett Silvertips defenseman Shaun Heshka has signed a 3-year entry level NHL contract with the Vancouver Canucks earlier today. For the Silvertips, Heshka becomes the sixth player in Silvertips franchise history to sign an NHL contract.

The Melville, SK native played his entire WHL career with the Silvertips and is currently the 2nd all time leading scorer in Silvertips franchise history with 107 points (25 goals, 82 assists) in 204 games played. Heshka is also the all time Silvertips leader in career assists (82) and games played (204). Shaun also holds the Silvertips single season record in assists with 49 helpers during the 2005-2006 season.

Last season Heshka finished 2nd on the Silvertips in scoring and 2nd in the WHL in defensemen scoring with 59 points (10 goals, 49 assists). Shaun received Western Conference Second All-Star Team honors and was named the Greyhound WHL Player of the Week (January 9 -15).

Heshka was the Silvertips Assistant Caption in both the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. In 2003-04, he received the Silvertips Unsung Hero Award and in 2004-05 he received both the Silvertips Booster Club F.I.E.R.C.E. Predator Award and the Silvertips Ironman Award.

"Shaun played a huge role in the success of our club the past three seasons and we wish him the best of luck," said Silvertips Director of Operations Zoran Rajcic. "We are excited that he will be joining the Canucks organization and we think that it is a great opportunity for him.â€

“I am thrilled to sign my first pro contract with the Vancouver Canucks organization,†mentions Shaun Heshka. “My time spent here in Everett was a great experience and I would like to thank the Silvertips organization and the Everett fans for their help and dedication.â€

Good eye, thanks for this. I like moves like this, can't hurt, but potentially could be useful and if we're really lucky, could become a steal. With our pipeline as shallow as it is, and given that we're not going to a wholesale rebuilding process, I think moves like this have to become a priority in the short-term until we can load up on draft picks and re-stock the system.

Good signing for the Moose. Nice to see Nonis bring in some added help for the farm to add to the other additions of Reid and Santala as well. There should also be a couple CHL prospects graduating to the Pro level (Vincent, Hansen, Ellis) that will only help too.

Uh... come again? huh.gif

Are you saying he's got a couple years experience in the WHL? Or a couple more years, at least one more left to play in the WHL?

Either way, he's 20 now. He had an exceptional NA debut in the Dub, adjusted to the game seemlessly. Nevertheless, his continued development would likely benefit playing against bigger, faster players rather than the status quo. If he has a strong camp, he'll likely be offered a contract to play with the Moose. They could use his scoring.

So uh...

Nice signing. I really think its time to retool the farm team. It seems like we have a bunch of guys that have the potential to be 3rd or 4th line guys (grinders) I know Nonis wants to keep the moose competitive but it might bve time to inject a lot of youth and see if someone can blosom. Been a long time since anyone has been developed through the Canucks system. ( Allen ? )

Sorry should have clarified. I meant skilled players. Add Auld i guess although i dont even know if he was ever really a starter down there. Flaherty kept steeling his job. Burrows and Bieska we'll see they both have a way to go till they really contribute.

Oooh, skilled players. Then yeah, Allen would be a solid example.

Auld played in the minors, he developed in the minors. I don't know how else you can clarify "been a long time since anyone has been developed through the Canucks system."

It's all good, clarification would have been nice since this is a worthy topic of discussion. smile.gif

so he's an offensive d-man with a right handed shot. anybody seen him play? how is his skating? good job by nonis and co to land him though... worthy of a shot.

Thanks Mooks!

This is awesome, I like this guy a lot already!. Sounds like he overcame a lot of adversity and self accomplishment to get where he is today. Love this quote:

QUOTE
"Every time Swift comes here, I talk to the coaches and they say, 'We're happy you're doing really well,'" Heshka said. "I just say 'thanks' and stuff, but really, you want to say, 'Up yours. Look at me now.'"

Most likely signed for the Moose as tryouts. The Moose GM has given the heads up on some FA prospects to Nonis to sign and he's been gold for the most part (Burrows, Rypien, Shultz).

Heshka hopefully turns out into a good depth player for us. We should sign more of these long shots since we really have nothing to lose from it (doesn't affect cap).
