Lightning to cut salary next year?
http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/tbl070304.html

Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster has been told the team is going to have to cut money out of its budget for next season.

The Ottawa Sun reports the Lightning's payroll in 2007-08 could be in the $37 million range.

According to the paper, that's led to speculation the Bolts will try and deal center Vinny Lecavalier, who is having a career-season.

If Feaster puts Lecavalier on the market, Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey is expected to be the first in line for his services.

if that happens, I'm sure that Montreal will look at him too. If that happens, would other teams be looking at landing him? If that happens, would Nonis try to pull another summer blockbuster trade? If that happens, what would it take in order to get that particular player on the 2007-2008 Canuck roster?

Let the speculation begin...

YES, THREE MONTHS EARLY! AND I LOVE IT AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

No Hjumanji, we don't even know that. As your initial post states, The Ottawa Sun(can we even take THEM at their word when they are talking about happenings in Tampa Bay) is reporting rumors that TB needs to cut payroll to 37mil.

It never once said it is happening. It's been rumored. We extrapolate a number at 37mil. Then we extrapolate that Lecavalier will be the one to leave. Then we extrapolate ways in which to get Lecavalier. That's just excessive pipe dreaming until a little more substantial rumor comes along.

Dream or not, I'll stick with our original offer of Morrison, Ohlund, and a 2nd for Lecavalier! Or even Morrison, Ohlund, Schneider and 2nd for Lecavlier and a prospect dman or young dman (like Ranger).

I think we should try to resign Smolinski as he'd be a good mentor for Kesler.

I wouldn't be surprised to get away with a deal like that - but dont think Mo will be going, he's overpaid and most of the league knows it - Ohlund, Schneider and a 1st would do it me thinks.

That's the only way I dump Schneider...for a top center, still young, like Vinny

I think that it would be wise to assess what other teams could be relatively offering. Montreal could very well be offering quite a lot so as to bring in local boy Lecavalier. Anaheim, New York Rangers, Detroit and Boston could be looking at Lecavalier and could be able to offer quite a substantial lot. He will most likely go to the West.

Morrison is seemingly overpaid on a Canuck squad that has adapted a defense first philosophy. At $3,200,000.00, he is still a legitimate clutch 2C who could be the perfect replacement behind Richards while cuting over $3,000,000.00 at center and investing that money on defense via an Ohlund acquisition. The Canucks also have Smolinski, who could sign back with Vancouver in the off season. I like that line of Cooke - Morrison - Cowan althoug Smolinski could replace Morrison on that line and they would have the same effect. Cooke - Smolinski - Cowan.

As stated above, I am also a subscriber of:

VAN
Lecavalier
Ranger

T.B.
Morrison
Ohlund
Schneider
1st

The question is, what would other teams' counter offers be.

Why is this even being discussed?

Tie up $19.625M worth of salary in 3 players? blink.gif

That's fuckin' crazy! wacko.gif

And sure it looks good because you dump Ohlund's $3.5M and Morrison's $3.2M, but that doesn't even cover Lecalavier's $6.875M.....and Ranger is a RFA at the end of this season, and with the year he's having, he'll be wanting at least $850K, if not more.

So we dump $6.7M worth of non increasing salary, and pick up $7.325M, with a virtual guarantee that it will increase to almost $8M. blink.gif

And then I suppose you want Nonis to re-sign Salo while he's at it. unsure.gif

Fuck hjumaeni.....you've been in Quebec too long. dry.gif

Short-sighted prick you are, what does being in Quebec have to do with anything, especially with the internet...

Think long-term here:

Naslund's contract expires after this season and he surely will not be re-signed at $6,000,000.00 per, whereas Lecavalier is signed through the 2009-2010 season, thereby making it a $6,875,000.00 and a $6,750,000.00 mega salary scheme; a $875,000.00 difference.

And Salo is replacable if not re-signed at $3,500,000.00.

Naslund - Lecavalier - Pyatt (6.000 - 6.875 - 1.500 - 14.375)
D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Carter (3.575 - 3.575 - 1.500 - 8.150)
Cooke - Smolinski - Linden (1.500 - 2.000 - 0.600 - 4.100)
Cowan - Green - Burrows (0.585 - 0.450 - 0.483 - )1.518

Mitchell - Bieksa (3.500 - 0.525 - 4.025)
Ranger - Sopel (0.850 - 2.500 - 3.350)
Krajicek - Bourdon (0.700 - 1.350 - 1.975)
Edler (0.450)

Luongo (6.750)
Sabourin (0.450)

TOTAL: $45,178,000.00, under a $46,750,000.00 projected average cap.

First off, Lecavalier's salary is $6.875M every year until the end of 2008-09, not 2009-10.

Secondly, if Naslund plays with Lecavalier he is almost guaranteed to crack 90 points. Should he re-sign to play with Lecavalier again, he might take a pay-cut of $1M.....more likely he would ink a 1 year extension at the same salary.

Finally, I don't see how $6.875M - $6.75M is a difference of $0.875M. blink.gif

No he's not. Especially if Ohlund is gone.....and I'm not a huge fan of our current Ohlund. But that's asking Mitchell and Sopel to become the vetran leadership on the blueline.

Carter is NOT coming back here. L-E-T I-T G-O! He has proven this year that he can't do fuck all on his own and Pyatt is playing quite well with the Sedin's. Now that teams know they have to watch the 3rd man on their line, the Sedin's RW'er will not be putting up 33 goals a year again unless he's a $3M player himself.

You would put Krajicek and Bourdon together? Krajicek has been hit and miss all season, and Bourdon is not yet NHL ready.....that would be a recipe for disaster everytime we were on the road and opponents were able to matchup against us in the offensive zone, especially with the "no-change" icing rule.

So lemme do the math here.....

Yep. You're and idiot. dry.gif

Here's a question themedic:

So lets say we just focus on Lecavalier and forget about Ranger for a second.

Say hypothetically the offer was

Ohlund (3.5)
Morrison (3.2)
2nd

Total 6.7 mill

for

Lecavalier (6.875 mill)

Total 6.875 mill

Would you pass up this trade up?

Yes we would have 3 players tied up with big salaries, but that would only be for a year. Nazzy's contract is up and it is possible that he may want more money after playing a season with Lecavalier, but Nonis isn't stupid. Lecavalier is younger and more talented. If Nazzy demands 6 mill (which i don't think he will), Nonis will hopefully elect to keep Lecavalier and Luongo. U can literally build a team around a superstar goalie and superstar centre. And i've said it before, the only chance of having someone like Lecavalier and Luongo is now because once the Sedin's contracts are up, they'll get 6 mill each easily.

I would definitely not pass this up. If Nazzy doesn't retire after next season, he may take a discount to play with Vancouver to win a cup! If he wants to leave for more money, then whatever, no big loss cause we'd have Lecavalier!

Eklund posted that the Oilers may go after Vinny in the offseason. Just thought that was interesting. Wonder who they would offer???
